roxanne jean polise

let's chase euphoria up your arm c20
[2006, nihilist]

roxanne jean polise is actually a guy. steve (or steev) thompson, specifically. he's from holly, michigan. rjp is a solo effort that steev started after the dissolution of his harsh noise group athenian mercury, whom you should definitely check out if you're into that sort of thing. in addition to that, he, much like everyone else, has his own record label, x died en route y. xdey for short. he's also in another noise group, my game of loving and has also started releasing under the name warmth. if you happen to across steev on a certain file-sharing network, he shares his label's discography along with his personal one as well.

aside from being one of the more inspired titles i've come across lately, let's chase euphoria up your arm was recorded when steev briefly took up residence in chicago. he's recently moved back, citing chicago as being 'super lame'. other than labeling rjp's music as experimental, steev's sound is hard to pin down, and since his discography is growing rather rapidly, i'd say that his diversity is a good thing.

the first side of the tape is a curious one. there's some drones in the background, but they're barely perceptible over a thick rumbling distortion which really overpowers everything that it comes in contact with. i spent a good part of the side's ten minutes wondering whether or not i had the volume set too high when i ripped the cassette onto my computer. the b side is where steev really shines though. gone is the chokehold distortion, and in it's place are different, random, noises and feedback. what really makes the side is steev's use of some high frequency tones in alternating and repetitious ways. one of the things that i most enjoy about roxanne jean polise, is that he can be deceptively catchy. while that's not what occurs most often in his music, it does ring true here. i'm not sure how large roxanne jean polise's fanbase is outside of the mid-west and east coast, since he really doesn't do large scale tours, but whatever it currently is, it should be a lot bigger.
