goat, sixes & xome

deluxe incinerator 3 x 3" cd
[2006, crippled intellect productions]

goat [pictured] is texan andy o'sullivan. andy o' also runs the philosophy shop label. i can't seem to track down an actual website for ps, just an incredibly incomplete discography on discogs.com which mostly lists andy's personal releases, as well as a solo release each by kazumoto endo (killer bug) and thirdorgan.

san francisco's xome (pronounced zome in case you were home-schooled), bob scott, is an artist that i would definitely have to place in the upper echelon of u.s. noise acts. despite xome's habit of not releasing one hundred things a year like some of his peers, he's consistently superb. i've seen him live twice, and both times were absolute highlights for me. bob also co-runs the harshnoise label/website with the equally impressive stimbox (tim oliveira). additionally, he owns noisefx which sells music gear for noiscians.

you should already know sixes if you've been following this blog at all, since this is now the third album i'm reviewing by him. in my defense two of those were sent to me. if you haven't been paying attention i'll give you the abbreviated version. sixes = ryan jencks. in oakland. is good. noise good.

despite having downloaded a few albums by goat over the years, i failed to actually listen to anything by him until now. sadly, an all too common occurrence for me. now that i'm actually listening to it, i'm impressed. pretty much straight up harshness, no trickery, nothing unexpected thrown in, just a great full on assault. it's dense, to be sure, but with some great feedback and other noises tossed in, i'm with andy for the full twenty minutes. i'm promising myself right now to listen to more goat.
ryan's disc is upholding my theory that it's best not to expect anything (in terms of sound, not quality, that much is a given) from a sixes release as he's one of the better artists when it comes to album to album variation. this time i have to say he's out done himself, not in a "what the hell is this?" sense, but the fact that this is probably my favorite thing by him. there's no density to be found here at all on the nine minute opener cop, instead it is pleasingly spread out and packed full of great nuances that you really need to listen to through headphones in order to fully appreciate how terrific it all is. smack has a fuller sound to it and raises the noise level up a bit. the last track, fix, is in a similar vein as the previous one, but the last two minutes of it have some great panned noise that manages to get even better as the disc draws nearer to completion. daaamn. that sums this one up. wait, daaaaaaaaaammmmmn. that's better.

holy crap, i should've taken my headphones off for xome's cd as this is loud as hell. xome's working with the density here, but he shows you how to flip that into something harsh as hell with some great pedal work. he's obviously not content to just relax behind a huge wall of distortion, this is screechy, rumbling, loud, harsh and making me completely fucking deaf. well done!

goat, sixes and xome all brought their a-game to deluxe incinerator, and i'd strongly recommend that you pick this one up.

Goat - 2002 V.2 (Excerpt from 7:44 to 10:57)
Sixes - Smack
Xome - Bii Dama

(note that the sixes and xome tracks are in m4a format, while the goat excerpt is mp3)
